What Is Semi-Permanent Eyebrow Makeup?

Semi-permanent eyebrow makeup deposits pigment into relatively superficial layers of the skin to create the look of fuller, more defined brows. Unlike traditional tattooing, the pigment is placed more superficially and typically fades gradually over time, which is why touch-ups are often part of maintaining the look.

Who Might Consider It

  • People with sparse, uneven, or over-plucked brows
  • Anyone who wants to cut down on their daily makeup routine
  • Those looking for a more defined brow shape that holds up through workouts, swimming, or humid weather

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  1. Consultation: Your practitioner discusses your desired shape, color, and goals, and maps out a brow shape suited to your face.
  2. Numbing: A topical numbing cream is typically applied to minimize discomfort.
  3. Pigment application: Pigment is deposited to build the desired shape and density.
  4. Aftercare instructions: You’ll be given guidance on how to care for your brows while they heal.

Healing and Aftercare

Freshly done brows typically appear darker and more defined immediately after treatment, then soften as they heal over the following weeks. During healing, it’s important to:

  • Avoid getting the area wet for the period your practitioner recommends
  • Skip makeup, exfoliants, and sun exposure directly on the area while it heals
  • Avoid picking at any flaking — let it shed naturally

A follow-up touch-up appointment is typically recommended a few weeks after your initial session to refine the shape and color once healing is complete.

How Long Does It Last?

Because the pigment fades gradually over time, most people return for touch-ups periodically to maintain the color and shape — how often varies by individual skin type, technique, pigment, and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

A topical numbing agent is used to keep the process as comfortable as possible. Most clients describe mild discomfort at most.

How soon will I see the final result?

The color appears more intense right after treatment and softens as it heals. The healed result is easier to assess after the initial healing period, and a touch-up may be used to refine the shape or color if needed.

Is this the same as microblading?

There are several techniques used for semi-permanent eyebrows, including microblading and other forms of cosmetic micropigmentation, each with a slightly different look and process. Your practitioner can walk you through which approach best suits your skin type and desired result.
